Corrugated Metal Panels vs. Standing Seam Metal Roofing | Roofing Mythbusters Series – Episode #4
Let’s talk METAL. Roofing expert Luke Wilson looks at the pros and cons of 29-gauge corrugated metal panels vs. 24-gauge standing seam metal roofing, and explains how a properly-installed standing seam roof will last you a lifetime.
Fabrel standing seam on a fairly complex gambrel /doghouse dormered home. Did all the work myself 23 YEARS ago. Some fading but going STRONG!
Sounds like fun! Bet it felt good to cross that one off your list.
Garages or sheds, if you have access for inspection. Also siding. I had 1 leaking screw in a pan and it took 3 tries to deal it. For a house i will only use standing seam.
I use old license plates on my house, for shingles. They have pre drilled holes.
@jeanjeudi1111 Kentuckys plates are white. It reflect heat. We’re really into the environment. It’s not uncommon to see toilet paper on a clothes line a few days before “check day”.
@Robert Butler Good Idea.
@Don Gosen Judging from the cost of license at about $25.00, I probably own the only house in the county worth over $500.
American ingenuity at its finest.
I’d think the red states should last longer than blue states. Plus lower cost for all those stickers …
No way I’m hiring a contractor when i am perfectly able to do the work myself
Good gravy the cost of hiring a contractor almost always kills any chance of getting a project done with a sensible budget
@Ashley Hussin some stamding seam panels just lock into each other without crimping of any sort. Good to have a rubber mallet for that though.
What kind of pitch you working with there Steve? How high is your roof from ground level…couple stories perhaps? Ever put a metal roof on while dust or dew begin to form on said roof? You could be in for a big surprise should your bravado bring you to that moment. Instead of Steve’s Shed you might be going by Steve’s Hospital bed. As Kip Dynamite famously said…”that’s what I’m talking about!” Lol
Very informative! Thank you! I’m in Texas. Do y’all have someone here to do this roofing?
@santa fe, bantayan island life haha
@MGGW Mcadams the screws placed on top? Are you meaning the rib?

Common sense would tell you that’s a horrible idea if that’s what you’re talking about
Awe man, I thought I was getting a Star Wars Video
That was an excellent video. I have used the first type of metal roofing on my storage shed. I will use the 2nd type of metal roofing when it is time to do my roof on my house.
kermitefrog64 you do know that the standing seam can triple the price? I thought I was too one time until I checked the price. Suddenly the 29 gauge R-9 panel looked just fine to me.
NOW ‘ that’s “A” Roof…
In New Zealand we use long screws and put them in through the rib, we never screw in the gully.
@Truth Seaker men only got the vote in the late 1800’s (not sure that was a good idea either), and even then they only got a vote if they owned property in many places
@Rob Garity yep we have a lot of bs -talking tradies in oz. Highly dishonest industry – unfortunately they are a necessary evil
“American”? North, South, Central? America is not a country; so, what’s your nationality?
@thegreatwhitenorth What’s wrong with you, small wee wee? Somebody from the USA is posting your girlfriend ?
When putting screws in the ribs you must not over tighten or panel will creep..
Expand and kick..
I go to harbor freight and buy a big blue trap and lay it over my roof every couple of years. And yes, I use tires to hold it down. My HOA and neighbors love me ?
@Stephen and Lori Young that’s why I have the raptor….hood rich?
@Spank Me Wait, wait… Is the blue tarp roof on your Raptor? I’m so-o confused! I’ve never seen that.
Nothing like a HOA to let people do whatever they want.
Cement and fabric….we all can be roofers
I like to use brown or camo tarps, that way it’s harder to see from satellite imaging. And use rusty steel wheels to hold it down.
I’ve roofed since 1974,
I do Inspections and repairs these days.
I cannot stand roofing videos on YouTube,
But my response is to applaud you for your presentation,
Very well done and you are in my thoughts, a Professional!! Hands Down, well done Brother.
I enjoyed this ☮️☀️??
Gabriel Barnes that’s a different product to the 3 rib exposed fastener system shown here. Every manufacturer here in US says screws in the valley. I’ll trust the manufacturer….
@Gabriel Barnes Back when we used nails for attaching metal panels, we always put them on the ridges. But when they came out with the screws, we started putting them on the flat because that was recommended by the manufacturers.
@Gabriel Barnes That is what I thought!
Applaud what?…. The fact he has no idea!… With metal roofing you NEVER screw through the tray… Only ever fix through the high ribs of the sheets!!…. Obviously American’s don’t use a lot of metal sheet roofing… https://qldsheetmetal.com.au/about-us/installation-maintenance/roofing-installation-guide/
You got me beat…28yrs retired from tile installation
Now come on boys, I have tissues for your tears.
When I watch YouTube videos about abandoned houses most with metal roofs are in good shape while the ones that have shingles are falling down from water damage.
@Brian Hoxworth Priorities.
The houses are gone, barn still standing. That right there says some thing about a good roof!
Wow. I am engineer and have lived in houses w asphalt shingles roofs these go 10 to 15 years. This is way to go impressive.
Just found your channel. I’ve have learned more in this 7 minute video than in the past year watching others. You are direct and to the point and for that I am thankful !

Well I live on a tropical island ? and three years ago, we got hit by Maria! a category 5 Hurricane. And I did not get any roof damage, the Eye of the storm ⛈ came right over my town in Puerto Rico ??. These panels placed by an Expert, will Hold up very well. Cat 5 Hurricanes are nothing to sneeze at.??????????????
The stone cold Steve Austin of roofing and that’s the bottom line
with a random guy tossing him a tube of caulk from 30 yards away
I still prefure gararde steel tile. Lifetime warranty. On material. 50 years warranty for the installer.
Watching this makes me wonder what my roof looks like up top on my double-wide.
I am having a roofing company come to give a written estimate tomorrow.
I have two leaks from storm damage that I am doing an insurance claim to repair.
I wanted a metal roof but was told by a HVAC person not to get a metal roof
Because if it is not done right it will cause the AC to struggle in cooling the house below 80% if the outside Temp is over 90% .
And you have to keep checking the nails to re-secure any that have backed out.
And some dont strip down to the wood before installing the metal roof.
Which sucked because I thought metal roofs lasted longer.
And dont blow off peace by peace like shingles.
I figured with proper insulation it would be better.
My brother had this kind of roof on his house, it worked flawlessly untill a tree whacked his roof. The house insurance had to reroof the whole house because there was no way to match up the colour. **** important factor with this roofing*** It is completely re-usable. I have had it on my roof for ten years and there is nothing wrong with it. There are no holes through the roofing material that need to be lined up. It clips apart and together like it was new. My roof was a lot smaller so I had lots of material. Free roofing that will last my lifetime.
On the second style of panels, I wish you did a close up on the overlap end, of the standing seam to see how it seals .
